She has said, “When I paint someone, I am less concerned with likeness than with the character or spirit of that person.”

Ms. McKenzie was born in Cleveland. She studied at the Art Students League of New York, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Cooper School in Cleveland, and the National Academy. Her teachers were Robert Philipp, Robert Brackman, José Cintron, Daniel Greene, and Burton Silverman.

She is represented in many public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian Institution, the Brooklyn Museum, the New Britain Museum of American Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Museum of the City of New York, the National Academy, and the New-York Historical Society. Hirado Egg-Shell Ware and Mikawachi Porcelain Of Japan

July 22, 2017

Mikawachi is a small mountainous village in Sasebo, near the borders of Nagasaki and Saga prefectures, well known for its porcelain. Mikawachi ceramics are not mass-produced like other brand names in Japan, and its high quality and distinctive appearance has been carefully maintained and developed to be one of the finest ceramic traditions in Japan. The distinguishing characteristics of Mikawachi porcelain are its rich-blue-on-snow-white appearance along with its elaborate and intricate carving. Formed from porcelain stone mined in nearby Amakusa, Kumamoto, each vessel is decorated with an underglaze technique known as sometsukeusing a light-blue cobalt oxide pigment called gosu. These characteristics have been preserved over the centuries and passed down from generation to generation of the Nakazato family in Mikawachi.

Brought to us by Art Coordinator Shoko Hayashi and curated by Beñat Iglesias, this exhibition will encourage a further appreciation in the high quality work that kilns in Mikawachi keep producing nowadays.

The exhibition will be open from July 22-29, 2017, with an opening ceremony on Friday July 22ndfrom 6-8pm.

Lois Gold New Painting

May 07, 2015

The mixed media works of Lois Gold are both immensely intriguing and peaceful at the same. Gold’s paintings pull the viewers in with their soft colors and intriguing textures. Embracing “happy accidents” and following a primarily intuitive process, the artist utilizes a wide variety of materials and techniques to give her work not only depth of color, but of surface as well. Drawing inspiration from the beauty around her as well as an extensive collection of art books, Lois Gold aims to create a balance between figurative imagery and abstraction. “My color choices range from the warm drama of Turner to the pastel colors of Monet,” she says. With an abundance of textures and emotive elements, her paintings are not only seen but also felt by the viewers.

Curated by Beñat Iglesias, Lois Gold’s “New Paintings” exhibition will be on view at the Alex Adam Gallery from May 7 through June 5, 2015.
